I've been excited to share this post with you, but had to be patient for reasons you'll know soon enough. I bring you Homemade Vanilla Extract!
Yes, it's true. You can make yourself a whole jug of vanilla in your kitchen, and here's how:
Ingredients:
2 cups vodka
I saved the vanilla bean pods from my white chocolate candies, and decided to put them to use. Place the sliced vanilla bean pods in the bottle, and fill with vodka all the way to the top.
Let the bottle sit at room temperature for at 4-8 weeks, and you've got yourself vanilla extract ready for baking!
The quality of the alcohol is up to you - I used Boomerang vodka from Trader Joe's. I grabbed the vanilla bean pods from Whole Foods, but I'm told you can get a really good deal on them from World Market.
I love this!!
Just discovering your blog after seeing your kitchen tour on thekitchn. Great to see how much you are able to do in a small space. I actually made homemade vanilla for Christmas gifts last year after finding it on the joythebaker blog. I made a batch using vodka and another using bourbon and I bought a large package of vanilla beans from beanilla.com. Big hit with my family and friends, and since I bake all the time good for me too!
Hi Leslie!
Thanks so much for checking my lil blog out 🙂
I’ve got to try making vanilla in bourbon. I can imagine it really creates a deeper flavor, yum.
Also THANK YOU for letting me know about beanilla.com. I’m officially obsessed and about to make an order.
