Homemade Ketchup - Becca Piastrelli

Hey there,

creative gal!

You’ve landed on a post I wrote a few years ago -
back when I was known as The Dabblist and was exploring all sorts of ways I could create beautiful things with my hands. It was a powerful time for me — awakening my creativity after suppressing it for so long — but this space has since evolved to reflect the woman I’m becoming.

I've been wanting to make ketchup for a while now, and finally had the courage to dive in this week. There is something very satisfying about being able to make your own condiments. Take that, Heinz!

ketchup in a pot

2 28-oz cans of pureed organic tomatoes

1 cup onions (finely chopped)

2 tbsp mustard

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup white vinegar

1/2 tsp ground allspice

1/4 tsp ground cloves

2 tbsp dry ground mustard

1 tsp salt

1 tsp ground black pepper

1 tsp celery seed

2 tsp garlic powder

making ketchup

Place all of the ingredients in a pot, and bring to a boil. Lower the heat, cover, and cook down for 2 hours. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. Blend all the ingredients with an immersion blender, and you've got yourself some tasty ketchup!
