A 28 day devotional practice

to orient you to a new (more meaningful, slower, and wilder) way of being
Dearest one,

I wrote my book Root & Ritual to serve as the sacred starting place in your journey to remember what you long for. Because what you long for points you in the direction of belonging, and we are living in a time where so many of us feel isolated and starving for connection.

We feel unrooted and disconnected from the land that is our home, we feel untethered from the long line of our ancestors and our deep human history, we lack strong, healthy communities that hold us accountable, and we even find ourselves grasping and searching for our own true selves. That all adds up to a restless un-rootedness, to a lack of belonging, and it’s more relevant now than ever.

Tending the Flame offers a pathway back to a deep sense of connection through ritual and practice.

I can’t allow Root & Ritual to gather dust on our bookshelves and coffee tables when we could be embodying it in a deeper and more sacred way. One of the challenging things about reading books is that they often only activate a small part of us – the head.

We can read so many books, but how much of the information contained in them do we actually retain?

And from what we retain, how much of that becomes wisdom that informs our thinking and behaviors in our daily lives?

And how much of that is helping us to live in a way that we really want to – a way that is slower paced, tending to our needs and the needs of our beloved ones, and and feeling a deep kinship with the land?

Not a lot. If at all. Especially in these fast-paced and exhausting times.

Together, let’s root a practice into habit.

Research shows us that habits are formed when repeated over time. It begins as a single action which, if repeated long enough, forms into a neural pathway that creates behavior change.

This is your opportunity to connect with what you’ve read and make it real – in your body, in your daily life, in your community, and in your spiritual practice (even if you haven’t had one – until now.

Let’s orient ourselves to a new way of being with this home practice. Let’s take it from our heads down into our bodies and root them into the earth – planting a seed for a different world.

Tending the Flame Home Practice is a next step on the journey for you.

Over 28 days, you will connect with practices that will root you into the words from my book into action in your life.

Just as the book is divided into four sections – land, lineage, community, and the self – this is a choose-your-own-adventure kind of an experience. Choose the area of your life that is pinging most when you read over those four words.

Do you feel a yearning to be in relationship with the living world around you?

Then choose land.

In this 28-day journey, I’ll guide you through rituals and practices to establish a feeling of kinship and reciprocity with the living world (even if you life in a city).

We’ll move from altar creation to respectful wild harvesting to crafting your own meal blessing.

You’ll complete your practice with a deeper relationship with the land right where you live and a toolkit of practices to incorporate into your daily life.

Do you crave deeper connection with your ancestors?

Then choose lineage.

In this 28-day journey, I’ll guide you through rituals and practices to reweave the threads of connection you have to all that came before you (whether you want to explore near relatives, far ancestors, or more-than-human beings you feel a connection to).

We’ll move from creating your own ancestral artifact to stepping into mythic time to smoke cleansing and creating a new legacy for the descendants to come.

You’ll complete your practice with a deeper relationship with what you consider to your lineage and a toolkit of practices to incorporate into your daily life.

Do you feel an absence of community or “the village” in your life that feels vital to change?

Then choose community.

In this 28-day journey, I’ll guide you through rituals and practices to be in the consistent practice of calling in and being supported by community (even if you’re an introvert or limited because of the pandemic).

We’ll move from releasing the pain of past hurts to conscious communication and intimacy building practices to actualizing community care in your life.

You’ll complete your practice with an intentionally thought out and sacred gathering for your growing community and a toolkit of practices to incorporate into your daily life.

Do you feel unworthy of love, success, meaning or joy in your life?

Then choose self.

In this 28-day journey, I’ll guide you through rituals and practices to reclaim your rooted sense of self.

We’ll move from releasing old stories to crafting a talisman to knowing how your body connects to the greater seasons and cycles of the wild.

You’ll complete your practice with deep reflections, rituals and a toolkit of practices to incorporate into your daily life.

Here’s how it works:

Over the course of the 28-day practice, I will send you an email every few days with a journal prompt, ritual, or activity from or inspired by my book, Root & Ritual, for you to engage with. And if your eyes are burned out on screen reading, I will also send you a link to listen to me reading the practice to you.

Here’s the thing though:

I don’t want this to be another course you sign up for, get overwhelmed with in your inbox, and never complete.

I am asking you to devote yourself fully to this work for just 28-days, enough time to embody these sacred practices and make lasting change in the way you do life. They aren’t more to-dos, they are sacred-get-to-dos.

I designed this home practice experience to be a layered approach to building your relationship with land, lineage, community, or yourself. Each of the practices I share with you contain multiple layers to deepen into. I want you to be gentle and realistic about what you’re able to do, knowing you can come back to them again and again to continue the relationship building forever. I know many of us are contending with our inner perfectionists and getting emails can sometimes trigger that urgent feeling of needing to rush to accomplish. But remember this is a practice, not a to-do list.

Are you longing to live your life according to a meaningful, slower, and wilder way of being?

FAQs

Closed - do not use

I haven't read the book - is this home practice for me?

Yes, you can still go through this home practice without having read the book, Root & Ritual. While the content is drawn from what I wrote in the book, it does not require you to have read it in order to understand or implement the practices I lay out for you. You can be a complete beginner to this work and still get a lot of out it.

I have read your book - will I get anything out of this home practice?

Yes, you will. This home practice was designed to take what I wrote in Root & Ritual and make it actual, physical habit in your daily life. I want you to be able to embody your values – not just keep it up in your head all day. It is my hope that this home practice will help you do that.

What if I want to do more than one theme for my practice (or all 4)?

You are certainly welcome to complete more than one of the practice themes, but I strongly advise against doing them at the same time. Each one was designed to be done on its own, and adding in another could easily create distraction and overwhelm. Remember, the intention behind this home practice is to root practice into real deal habit into your life. So take it slow and go one at a time. If you do decide to do more than one practice theme, I do not offer a discount.

Will this require a lot of my time?

I will send you 10 practices gently spaced out over 28 days. Each practice is meant to be acted on within a day of receiving it, but of course if you need more space to complete a practice that’s ok. I also understand that we have our own needs to integrate information and practices, so it’s possible this practice will take you more than 28 days. Think of it as a sacred devotional act, not another thing on your to do list.
