I've touched upon Ayurveda a little bit before, when I showed you how to make ghee. I've long been curious about the Ayurvedic lifestyle, but haven't been able to fully commit to it (classic dabblist, eh?). However, I have found some wonderful recipes through Ayurveda that have done wonders to my energy and digestive system. Recently, I discovered this recipe for Golden Milk. Golden Milk is milk and honey with spices, and is easier for your stomach to digest than just a glass of milk.
Ayurvedic yogis believe milk is sacred because it is the only food freely given from a mother, with love and without violence or the death of the organism, providing tremendous nourishment. (Joyful Belly)
Isn't that just a wonderful sentiment?
The cinnamon and cardamom help with digestion, while the golden turmeric is a natural antibiotic and antimicrobial. The honey is nature’s medicine, breaking down stomach mucous and stimulating the immune system. I have done this recipe with cow's milk, goat's milk, and almond milk. Delicious and soothing every time.
2 cups organic milk (whatever you choose!)
1 tbsp. honey
1/4 tsp ground cardamom
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground turmeric
Heat the milk over medium heat with the spices, setting the honey aside. Once milk starts to simmer, remove from heat, whisk the spices, and let sit to cool a bit. Pour into cup with the honey*, stir to liquefy honey and enjoy!
*It is not recommended to heat honey very hot, as it can develop toxicity.
