Last week, someone posted this question on my facebook page:
Dabblist, I often see natural-food stores sell bottled "fruit and vegetable wash" that has a rather hefty price-point (when compared to plain old tap water). Any recommendations on a homemade solution to get rid of those pesticides and germs?
And my answer is: You can make your own produce wash at home for super cheap!
Ingredients:
1 cup water
1 cup white vinegar
1 tbsp baking soda
20 drops grapefruit seed extract
Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle and keep by your sink to easily spray on fruits and veggies when prepping them.
Be careful when adding the baking soda, the combination with vinegar can be a bit explosive!
You can purchase NutriBiotic Grapefruit Extract from a natural food store or online (I got mine on Amazon).

This is fantastic! What is the rationale behind the grapefruit extract? Would other citrus extracts work as well? Thanks Dab!!
Grapefruit Seed extract (not the oil) is from the compounded seeds and pulp of the grapefruit, which contain very potent anti-bacterial polyphenols. For washing produce and naturally sanitizing, grapefruit seed extract is my top choice. You could use lemon or pomegranate as well, but grapefruit is the most bang for your buck.
