Kale Chocolate Morning Smoothie

You’ve landed on a post I wrote a few years ago -
back when I was known as The Dabblist and was exploring all sorts of ways I could create beautiful things with my hands. It was a powerful time for me — awakening my creativity after suppressing it for so long — but this space has since evolved to reflect the woman I’m becoming.

In my other life of working in the big city for a fast-paced corporate software company, the temptation for convenience over health and balance is something I face every day. That's real. Being surrounded by fast food and sugary or salty treats when you are on the go is something I struggle with on the daily.

I've realized that living a life of true wellness means you gotta put in the work. While it's easier to grab a breakfast burrito in the morning, it's smarter to wake up a little earlier and make a beautiful, nutrient-rich green juice with fresh greens. And while there must be 15 coffee shops in a two block radius from my office in San Francisco, making it so easy to grab a latte right on my way in in the morning, I know that taking the time to make a coffee infused green smoothie will start my day on a much better note. I always thank myself later.

 Derived from a drink called The Aztec Spirit (I love that), this morning smoothie is an excellent double shot latte alternative, with way more beneficial ingredients (the kale is nearly disguised by the luscious chocolate, smooth coffee, and fiery cayenne). Cold and frothy, serve it in lieu of iced coffee at your next al fresco lunch!

Chocolate Kale Morning Smoothie

  • 2 cups almond milk
  • 3 tbsp raw cacao powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 dates, pitted
  • 2 shots instant coffee
  • 3 kale leaves, stripped from stem
  • pinch of cayenne pepper

Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender, and blend until frothy and smooth. Drink immediately.
